Food security is an issue important to the well-being of all citizens in the District of Lunenburg.
Taking a proactive approach, the District has begun developing a Local Food Security Action Plan to identify food security programs and strategies for the region. The food security plan will identify and prioritize several key action items to be delivered by 2030, one of which will be the establishment of a Food Hub for the District to better connect local food suppliers and the end consumers. To address this goal, the District is undertaking a project to explore the feasibility of creating a food hub and associated impact network to serve the community.
To date, we have undertaken surveys of consumers and local food markets to better understand local food consumption patterns. In addition, the local agriculture community has also been surveyed to help identify the local food supply capacity and to highlight supply gaps. You can read the What We Heard Report here. This survey information will be available as background reports for the project to assess the feasibility of establishing a Food Hub in the District.
Join us for an in-person workshop at the Best Western in Cookville on Wednesday, February 26 at 6:30pm. This will follow the format of a short presentation to begin, then tables with facilitators asking questions of the groups to discuss.
