Solar panels are becoming an increasingly popular option for property owner to help increase sustainability and reduce energy costs. Roof mounted solar panels come with potential structural issues that must be taken into consideration to protect the structural integrity of your roof and structure.
Building permits are required for all roof-mounted solar panel installations.
To apply for a building permit for roof-mounted solar panels, the following is required with your application:
- Our Application Form for Building, Development, or Demolition Permits filled out (select renovation on the form).
- A location plan that shows the distances from all sides of the structure that the solar panels will be mounted on to the property lines.
- An engineering assessment of the roof structure in relation to the installation of the solar panels (this is to ensure that your roof structure can handle the additional load of the solar panels without compromising the structural integrity of the roof).
To finalize your building permit, the final electrical inspection report will be required.
